What is Martindale abrasion resistance?
The Martindale test is an international test that measures the abrasion resistance of fabrics. This is done by subjecting a fabric sample to friction with a standard material, such as wool, under controlled pressure and speed. The number of rubs a fabric can withstand before visible damage, such as thread breakage or wear, occurs determines the Martindale value.
The Martindale value indicates how durable a fabric is and how well it can withstand daily wear and tear. The higher the Martindale value, the better the fabric is suited for intensive use.
Here is a general overview of Martindale values for different applications:
- Decorative use: <6,000 rubs
- Light domestic use: 6,000 - 10,000 rubs
- Normal domestic use: 10,000 - 20,000 rubs
- Intensive domestic or commercial use: 20,000 - 40,000 rubs
- Very intensive commercial use: >40,000 rubs
Most of our fabrics have a Martindale value of 100,000 or higher, which means they are of very high quality and highly suitable for intensive use, such as in offices or public spaces. These fabrics offer excellent durability and can withstand daily intensive use.
