Keyboards

Research by Microsoft has shown that an active computer user covers up to 32 km daily with his fingers. This makes the keyboard an important part of the computer. This is why the choice of keyboard is so important.

Different types of ergonomic keyboards

Our assortment includes different types of ergonomic keyboards, from compact keyboards such as the UltraBoard 950 and the S-Board 840 to more standard formats like the C-Board 810. We also have split ergonomic keyboards, like the Goldtouch Adjustable V2. And we also have a stand-alone alphanumeric keyboard, which is often used next to the compact keyboard and can be placed to your left or to your right. It also functions as a calculator.

Independent research: Compact versus standard keyboards

Ergonomic keyboards shorten the reaching distance to the mouse, alleviating underarm strain. Research has shown that nearly 90% of users hardly use a numeric pad, if at all (Cakir, 2008). Ideally, an alphanumeric pad is optional and can be used to the left or to the right. Compact keyboards are experienced as more comfortable than standard keyboards (Van Lingen, et all, 2003).

Neutral body posture
A compact keyboard makes users adopt a good ergonomic posture. Because the keyboard is not as wide as a standard version, it shortens the reaching width of the mouse. This makes it possible to adopt a neutral body posture.

What are the other features of a compact keyboard?
Standard and compact keyboards are different in both size and layout. The compact version does not include an alphanumeric portion. The arrow keys are elsewhere, and the keyboard also has an editing portion (that includes the delete key). The portion with the character keys and the distance between keys are comparable to those of a standard keyboard.

Occupational guidelines
According to Dutch regulations for occupational conditions (art. 5.1), people may not work on a laptop (without accessories) for more than two hours a day. In a laptop the keyboard and the screen are integrated. When an external keyboard and mouse are used, this legal restriction of two hours no longer applies. ISO standard
The European guideline, or ISO standard, recommends a neutral body posture when using a keyboard and mouse. That is not achievable with a regular keyboard, according to the ISO organisation.
