An ergonomic keyboard for better posture

Working with an ergonomic keyboard improves the comfort and productivity of on-screen employees. In this article, we give our advice on how to use the different types of keyboards.

Important points to remember

  • The keyboard should be centered in front of the monitor, with space for the wrists to rest. Preferably, the forearms are on the armrests of the office chair.

  • Dark letters on a bright background makes it easier to read the keys.

  • The flatter your keyboard, the better. Your hand should be in line with the wrists, and therefore should not be brought up in extreme flexion.

  • Make use of keyboard shortcuts as much as possible. In addition to saving time, this provides significant benefits by reducing the number of mouse clicks.

  • It is important that the side edges of the keyboard are no wider than the shoulder width of the user. This reduces the strain on the forearms and shoulders. We therefore recommend the use of a compact keyboard.

Types of keyboards

Compact standard keyboard

This type strives, at a minimum, for a neutral position of both wrists. It does have a numeric section, but is still 8 cm narrower than a traditional keyboard. The reaching distance to the mouse is thus reduced.

Compact keyboard

A compact keyboard does not have a numeric section. With this keyboard, the reaching distance to the mouse is optimally reduced, allowing you to adopt a neutral body posture. An additional advantage is that this type is easier to transport. If necessary, a numeric part can be connected separately.

Note: Most keyboards in Europe have a QWERTY layout. Belgium and France mainly work with AZERTY keyboards. For that reason the range of compact keyboards with AZERTY layout is limited.

Split keyboard

This keyboard hinges in the middle via a ball joint. This means that you can tilt both the left and right parts outward. This puts the wrist and forearm in a natural, straight line to the keys. This reduces muscle tension.

This type of keyboard is smoothly adjustable for specific medical complaints. If necessary, the tilt can also be adjusted stepwise. With this keyboard, the ability to type blind is certainly an advantage.

Numeric keyboard

If you need to enter numbers frequently, we recommend using a compact keyboard + separate numeric keypad.
